Today in AI: Google introduces agentic commerce rails, Microsoft scales retail automation, and shopping enters the chat.

NRF week always brings big promises. This year, it’s different.

The announcements aren’t about “AI someday” — they’re about AI doing the work right now. From shopping agents to autonomous checkout and retail “digital brains,” the direction is clear.

Let’s dig in.

🔥🔥🔥 Three big updates

Google announced a full-stack push to make AI agents first-class participants in commerce. The headline move is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) — a new open standard co-developed with retailers like Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart.

UCP is designed to support the entire shopping journey, creating a shared language so agents, retailers, and payment systems can work together across Search, Gemini, and business platforms. This is infrastructure, not a feature.

On top of that foundation, Google is rolling out new agent-powered experiences. Shoppers will be able to buy directly from eligible U.S. retailers while researching in AI Mode, chat with brands via Business Agents, and see exclusive Direct Offers inside AI Mode when they’re ready to buy.

Google is also introducing new conversational attributes to help businesses become more discoverable across AI surfaces like Search AI Mode and Gemini. Commerce is moving from pages to conversations — fast.

Microsoft announced new agentic AI capabilities designed to power intelligent automation across the entire retail value chain — not just customer-facing interactions.

The focus is on agents that can reason, plan, and act across functions like merchandising, supply chain, store operations, customer service, and marketing. Instead of isolated copilots, Microsoft is positioning agents as coordinated systems that operate end-to-end.

This matters because it reframes retail AI as operational infrastructure. The goal isn’t better answers — it’s fewer handoffs, faster decisions, and systems that can execute autonomously within guardrails.

Retail AI is shifting from productivity gains to structural change.

Google also announced expanded partnerships with Walmart and other major retailers to enable in-chat shopping inside the Gemini AI chatbot.

This allows users to discover products, compare options, and complete purchases without leaving the conversational interface. Shopping becomes part of the dialogue — not a separate destination.

Combined with Google’s checkout features and UCP, this signals a future where AI agents don’t just recommend products — they transact on the user’s behalf. The shopping journey collapses into a single interaction.

Search, chat, and checkout are no longer distinct steps.

Anthropic shared a practical guide on using XML tags to structure prompts for better reasoning and output control. It’s simple, but powerful.

1. Wrap different parts of your prompt (instructions, context, constraints) in clear XML-style tags.
2. Separate “what to do” from “how to respond” to reduce confusion.
3. Use tags to isolate data inputs from reasoning steps.
4. Ask the model to explicitly follow the tagged structure.

This approach is especially useful for long prompts, workflows, or multi-step tasks.
